Is there anything I should not put into my septic system?

No matter what type of onsite wastewater treatment system you own, there are certain items that should never go into your system.

When it comes to your septic system, you should only add to two things: toilet paper and human waste. Other items such as flushable wipes are detrimental to the system and should not be flushed. Let's go over other items and why you should never flush them down your toilet.

  1. Non-biodegradable materials: Do not flush or dispose of non-biodegradable items such as plastics, diapers, sanitary napkins, or paper towels. These items can clog the system and cause backups.

  2. Grease and oils: Avoid pouring grease, cooking oils, or fats down the drain. These substances can solidify and clog the pipes and the septic tank.

  3. Harsh chemicals: Do not dispose of harsh chemicals like bleach, paint, solvents, or pesticides down the drain. These chemicals can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the septic tank and harm the system.

  4. Medications: Avoid flushing expired or unused medications down the toilet. Medications can contaminate the groundwater and harm the environment.

  5. Excessive water usage: Be mindful of excessive water usage, such as running multiple appliances simultaneously or taking long showers. Excessive water can overload the septic system and lead to backups.

Remember, proper maintenance and regular pumping of the septic tank are essential to keep your septic system functioning effectively. If you have any specific concerns or questions about your septic system, it is recommended to consult a professional septic service provider.
