When you use fertilizers and pesticides near your water well, there’s a risk of contaminating your drinking water. These contaminants may include bacteria, pesticides, fertilizer residues, oil products, and other pollutants. If any of these substances find their way into your well, they can potentially harm the health of your family. To safeguard your well water, consider the following precautions:

  1. Safe Distance: Maintain a safe distance of at least 100 feet between your well and areas where fertilizers and pesticides are applied. Check your local regulations and guidelines for the recommended distance in your location. This helps minimize the risk of contamination.

  2. Well Construction and Maintenance: Ensure that your well is properly constructed and maintained. Regular inspections and maintenance prevent potential leaks or breaches that could allow contaminants to enter the well. While deeper wells have a lower risk of contamination, the depth of the well alone does not guarantee water safety.

  3. Handling and Storage Practices: Follow recommended practices for handling and storing fertilizers and pesticides. Proper storage reduces the chances of accidental spills or leaks.

  4. Regular Testing: Regularly test your well water to verify its safety. Nitrogen from fertilizers, for example, can break down into nitrate. If you live near an agricultural field where fertilizers are used, consider testing specifically for nitrate levels.
