What is an ultra-violet (UV) filter system?

Learn what UV filter systems can and cannot remove from your well water.

Updated over 11 months ago

An ultra violet (UV) filter system is a water treatment system that uses ultraviolet light to disinfect water by inactivating bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms. The UV rays damage the genetic material of these microorganisms, preventing them from reproducing and causing illness. UV filter systems are commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial settings to ensure the safety and purity of drinking water.

It is important to note that these systems do not remove any chemicals from the water, so other water treatment systems may be required in addition. Clear water is crucial when using a UV filter system. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions to determine if a pre-treatment, such as a sediment filter is required, and to ensure the system is properly operated and maintained. It is always recommended that you choose a home water treatment that has been certified by a third-party.
