Many people feel like, "Well, my water tastes fine, it looks fine. It must be fine." Water can taste great and look safe, but many contaminants are colorless, odorless and have no taste, which means you don't even know they're there.

Is the taste of my water a reliable indicator of safety?
If your water tastes fine, it may not be a cause for immediate concern. However, taste alone is not a reliable indicator of safety, and it is recommended to have your water tested regularly to ensure its safety.
Whose responsibility is it to maintain a private water well?
Remember as a well owner is that your well is not regulated except in a very few places in the country. As the owner, it is your responsibility to be the steward and the water operator for your very small water supply. It is up to you to make sure the water is safe, and that the system is maintained. Testing can help identify any potential issues or contaminants that may be present in the water supply.
